Ethiopian Coffee
When I think about why Ethiopian Yirgacheffe holds a special place in my heart and on the shelves of Artessa Coffee, I am transported back to my early twenties in Eger, Hungary. Coffee was not just a beverage but a ritual, an exploration, and a moment of peace in the hustle of my daily life in University and alter as an architect.
The Coffee Shop That Started It All
In my hometown of Eger, there was a quaint little coffee shop that only served coffee and tea. This shop became my sanctuary. Every time I returned from university, I would find myself gravitating towards this cozy haven. The coffee aroma and the sight of coffee beans stored in open barrels lined up in an old-fashioned display—it was mesmerizing.
The shop was unique, offering a rotating selection of over a dozen coffees from various origins and a range of roasting styles. From the light Viennese roasts (what we now call city roast) to the darkest French roasts, it was a playground for a coffee enthusiast. The owner of that little shop would create random blends from three different coffees every day. Little did I know, this tiny shop was preparing me for the adventure of a lifetime—running my own coffee business.
An Unforgettable Journey with Ethiopian Yirgacheffe
Ethiopian Yirgacheffe quickly became my favorite. I remember the first time I tasted it; its elegant character and floral notes captivated me. The subtle acidity and perfect, not-too-heavy body were unlike anything I had experienced before. And the aftertaste—simply wonderful. Over the years, I have explored many other coffees, but Yirgacheffe always hits that special spot. It’s the coffee I return to time and time again.
This preference didn’t come out of nowhere. For many years I spent countless hours in that little coffee shop, learning about the unique characteristics of different coffee-producing regions, the impact of roasting styles on flavor, and the nuances of blending. I experienced firsthand how exposure to air could alter the taste of coffee and how different blends could create entirely new flavor profiles. Without realizing it, I was conducting my research, preparing for the day I would create and run Artessa Coffee.
Bringing Ethiopian Yirgacheffe to Artessa
When it came time to choose the coffees that would define Artessa, Ethiopian Yirgacheffe was an obvious choice. Its unique flavor profile—elegant, floral, subtly acidic—aligns perfectly with our commitment to offering high-quality, distinctive coffees. We opt for a light roast to preserve these delicate flavors, knowing that a dark roast would burn out the very characteristics that make Yirgacheffe so special.
Ethiopian Yirgacheffe is more than just a coffee to me. It’s a journey that began over 25 years ago in a small coffee shop in Hungary. It’s a testament to the power of coffee to bring joy, create memories, and inspire a lifelong passion. At Artessa, we are proud to share this exceptional coffee with our customers, inviting them to experience the same enchantment that captivated me all those years ago.
Choosing Ethiopian Yirgacheffe for Artessa is not just a business decision; it’s a personal one. It’s about sharing a piece of my journey, my learnings, and my love for this extraordinary coffee. Whether you’re a seasoned coffee enthusiast or new to the world of specialty coffee, I invite you to savor the elegance and complexity of Ethiopian Yirgacheffe. It’s a coffee that tells a story—my story, and now, part of Artessa’s story too.
