The Hummingbird Culico coffee originates from the Flor Del Café farm, nestled in the highlands of Huehuetenango, Guatemala. The farm covers 300 hectares and was founded in 1958 by Oswaldo Perez, then inherited in 1982 to 8 sons, including Oswaldo Perez Jr. who was the one who really loved farming and coffee production and who still manages the farm currently alongside his son Max Perez. In 1990, Oswaldo Perez bought the rest of the land from the original farm off his brothers, becoming the full owner of Flor del Cafe. Oswaldo studied and qualified as an agronomist, he has built up a large amount of knowledge and experience in the processing of coffee.
Managing big farms in Cuilco Huehuetenango, has become really challenging nowadays with climatic change and a serious lack of labor. Luckily Flor Del Cafe is one of the few farms left in the region operation with staff that work on the farm all year around, many of which have worked there from many generations and are well looked after . Most of the large farms in the region have disappeared due to these issues. Oswaldo continues to focus on quality, productivity and diversification, he is constantly trying to improve processes and practices on the farm and ensuring that Flor Del Cafe can continue to operate, producing quality and consistent coffees.
Additionally, the farm’s practices are certified Rainforest Alliance, Organic, and C.A.F.E. Practices, underscoring a commitment to environmental stewardship and community well-being.
With its SCA score of 85 points, this coffee offers a delightful flavor experience featuring sweet, solid notes of chocolate, caramel, and a crisp green apple acidity.
